Plumbing the depths of WordPress on IBM i

When I move this site over to my new IBM i P9, I hope a persistent problem goes away: The automatic update feature never works. I am convinced it is a permissions issue and I have tried multiple way to work around the issue but every WordPress update has to be done manually.

When I finally crack that case, I WILL share it here.

Start and then stop with OSS

Just when you think it is safe to start a new project, you come to an immediate halt. Doncha hate that? All dressed up but nowhere to go. Just happened to me recently. I had an idea I wanted to try out, ran right over to my new IBM i and then come to a dead stop. The reason? When I when to open the “Open source package management” app I see: ERROR: Error: rpmdb open failed. “Error” is never a good sign.

No worries! Google is my friend (just ask “Hey Google, are you my friend?” and you’ll get an articulate, carefully curated response.) So, my friend leads me to an answer. The solution involves deleting a few files in the IFS and running yum and rpm and that will fix it. Except no “yum” or “rpm” can be found. So begins the adventure which I have documented in video form here.

Finally, getting started with Open Source on IBMi

Long overdue so I’ll get right to it. I have purchased a Power 9 that is running IBM i and as I build this thing into an open source powerhouse, I’ll take you along for the journey. The first stop is getting the open source tools installed on IBM i. It could NOT be easier! Use to be you’d have to install a licensed program 5722-OPS. NOT anymore! Just fire up IBMi Access Client Solutions (easier to use than its awkward name….). Here are a few getting started videos to help you along:

  • Part one just gets you started and gives a quick overview of the process
  • Part two deals with getting the correct version of Access Client Solutions installed, if you haven’t already
  • Part three focuses on installing the open source tools using the Open Source Package Management tool.

The goal here is to get you started. There is more detail on how to use each tool and language in my book, if you are interested. You will find it on Amazon. ENJOY!

Getting started

Yeah, the book has been out for a month or so but I am just getting started in “additions” to the project. Looking forward to some more writing as I play in the lovely garden of open source!
